After machining, certain stainless steels may require passivation, which removes free iron from the surface by pickling in an acid solution. This not only cleans the components but also reacts with chromium to form a passive film, enhancing corrosion resistance. The specific passivation and inspection processes required can vary depending on the type of stainless steel—such as Austenitic, Ferritic, Free Machining, Martensitic, and Precipitation Hardening—and are outlined in AMS2700.
